Note: If you aren’t too familiar with the BSV in general, you may not appreciate just how active the club is and how dynamic the members are. We are first and foremost a Social Club and we take great pride in being one, but one that also enjoys competitive air gun competition. Please enjoy our gallery page showing off our membership, and if you are interested in older events, you can also check out our Archive Page. In any case, whether visitor or member, enjoy!

Schuetzenfest DASV: It seems that nothing ever slows down here at the BSV-Chicago, z,B., this past weekend when we had the Milwaukee Fest and the installation of a new King and Queen in Auburn Hills, Michigan both, on the last weekend of July. While abundant proof already exists that this club can multi-task parties, a large shout out has to go to the membership for their abundant time and energy whether they are working on behalf of the club or travelling to represent it. Thanks to everyone who makes this happen.

German Fest in Milwaukee: The weather couldn’t have been better in 2026 and thanks to all who came.

June 24-26, Andreas Hofer Wettschiessen in Peoria: Our yearly visit to our close friends in Peoria had an added attraction this year in that we had our first chance to see the Peoria Sport Vereins brand new club house. Eifersuechtig? Not us, honestly. Enjoy the pics (Below).

PSV has a new Lindenhof, congrats to Peoria and may you enjoy many years in your new home
The Range at the ‘new’ Lindenhof, impressive

After Peoria’s morning competition was completed, we were all invited to spend time with Ross at his nearby estate. In addition to all the food and drink, Ross put together a series of activities to keep all of his guests amused. Below. Thank you hardly does justice to the level of hospitality Ross provides year in and year out, but we want to say thanks, anyway.

Competing for fun at Ross’s, above, (L) John and (R) Toby. Note each participant has his own dedicated safety officer, Safety is the number one concern of all of our clubs and is no joke to us whether we are competing or just having a little fun.

Some BSV Members enjoying the afternoon in Peoria-2026

Sadly the afternoon had to come to an end, and we all went back to our rooms to change into our uniforms for the big banquet.

June Meeting in Uniform: We only meet in uniform twice a year, once in the Spring as we did this June 18th, and once again in the Fall. These evenings are generally a pretty big deal as we come together, receive any awards we may have earned and celebrate the club’s accomplishments over the preceding six months and just spend some quality time with our fellow club members. In other words, we put the Social in Social Club. However, 2026 was made even more special as we took a few moments to remember our good, good friend, Herbert Wischner, without whose tireless efforts our club would not exist and dedicate our range in his memory. Thank you Herbie, we really miss you.

Four of the people who built the club and gave us what we have, L-R, Rosie, Karl, Elly and Inga-Thank You!

The man who literally kept the club running for 30 years, Herbert Wischner without whom we would not be here today.

We were fortunate to be able to celebrate the birthday of two of our members at the June Meeting, Erich Freiberger and Dahra Parenteau, Alles Gute zum Geburtstag guys

Maifest 2026 was a great time for the BSV-Chicago as we once again contributed significantly to the overall success of the festival, and had a good time doing it too! It was wonderful spending time with our Schuetzengeschwister, listening to good music and enjoying perfect weather. We would like to thank all of the members and their families who took time out of their schedules to support the German American community this year-vielen Dank.

2026 Ohio Invitational-Cincinnati: If you are a new member, or possibly just visiting with us you may not be aware that the two Ohio Schuetzenvereine, Columbus and Cincinnati, alternate holding the annual Ohio Invitational each May. While it may seem trite, somehow, they seem to top the each other every year which was the case again in 2026, Thank you Cincinnati for a tremendous show. Below a few pics for you to enjoy.

The BSV on the Range
It seems that every trip the BSV takes brings a different mix of club members, which is great, as every competition seems fresh and unique. Here Anne Mickey and Doug take a crack at winning the title in Cincinnati

After the morning shoot the club went out and visited a brewery before taking a tour of “Underground Cincinnati” which was both fun and enlightening.

Later that evening we reconvened with our fellow Schuetzenvereine Mitglieder at the Donauschwaben Hall in Cincinnati for a fantastic night of feasting, music and dancing.

Kronungsball 2026: We had an amazing weekend this past April, spent with great people, made even better by the BSV reclaiming the Wanderpokal. Friday night was fun and thanks go to all of our bar tenders but especially club Meisterbrauer, Brad Pausha. The shoot went off without a glitch Saturday morning owing to the efforts of Schiesswarts Gale Fabish and Jordan Martin, who collected and collated the scores from all of the teams. Thanks to all the members who brought in Breakfast that morning too. On Saturday night after intense preperation by club members, we celebrated our 2026 Ball along with some 160 or more guests.

Scroll down for some great pics from the 2026 Ball, beginning with the highlight of the evening-the Wanderpokal.

Saturday morning followed Friday night all to quickly, but the business of running a safe and timely shoot wouldn’t wait. All of our guests are offered the use of safety eyewear and ear protection if they want it.

Alles Klar?

Fruehstueck doesn’t put itself out of course, and it takes many members of the club to come together to prepare, and serve, the mornings feast. Pickles and Liver Sausage on the Table? Sehr, sehr Deutsch

Our 2026 Kroenungsball and Wettschiessen weekend kicked off with a little meet and greet for our many out-of-town visitors Friday night at the DANK Haus. In all we were happy to have 60 or more friends in for a libation and a little food. Gut Schuss

The DASV arrive in force; the BSV were genuinely thrilled to welcome to the club the largest contingent of Auburn Hills, Michigan Schuetzen members in well over a decade. Welcome and come back soon!

The BSV Team at the inaugural Cape Coral Competition

The BSV-Chicago was thrilled to take part this year in Cape Coral, Florida’s inaugural, invitational competition, which took place on 20-21 March 2026. We, along with our Schuetzengeschwister from Peoria, attended what turned out to be a truly wonderful event. We cannot express our thanks enough for the hospitality of the Cape Coral club. The fact that the weather was perfect all week long didn’t hurt our opinion either. We will post a few pics as we get them

Competing outside in Cape Coral, what a treat

Above-BSV Team Members competing. After the competition, a delicious lunch prepared for us by the in-house Chef in their very own kitchen-Below

Following lunch, the Cape Coral club invited us outside again for a Fun Shoot, as you can see below. The BSV acquitted itself well, but none outdid the lone representative from the Cincinnati SV, Jen Cline. I know who I’m teaming up with during a Zombie apocalypse.

Afterwards we had a few hours to kill before the Ball began so it was off to one of our members houses to relax over a drink and a cigar before returning for the main event.

Chilling outside, Thank you Mike Z for the Cigars and John M for the Cherry Landjager

Cape Coral put on quite a show for us, featuring a full band, a great performance by their Sangerchor and wonderful food before having the participating clubs fall in for a Fahnenparade and announcing the new Cape Coral Schuetzenverein King and Queen. The Choir

If your familiar with this club at all, then you must have guessed that we took the time out to experience the local social life, as we are, after all the Club der Gemütlichkeit.

The BSV at the Jungle Bird, Monte Approved!

The weekends fun in Cape Coral didn’t end there either as we later stopped for a nice dinner before heading home and resting up for a Sunday adventure spent with friends.

Sunday morning dawned and the club reconvened at yet another members’ home in Cape Coral (Maybe we should consider opening a second chapter of the BSV?) where Lisa had arranged a beautiful breakfast for us on the lanai before departing for a five hour cruise in the boat. Thank you to Geoff and Lisa for a perfect day on the water

St Hubertus Jager Ball, 7 Mar 2026: If there is one event of the year that we attend because of, and not in spite of the food, it has to be the annual Hunters Ball in Des Plaines. Not only is the food great but with nearly 400 attendees, you are bound to run into a lot of friends, I know we certainly do. Two of our very favorite people, Below.

Rheinischer Verein Maskenball, 14 Feb 2026: Karneval kicks off annually every November 11th, and the BSV was there to celebrate, along with Chicago’s oldest Mardi Gras Society, the Rheinischer Verein-Chicago, (Scroll down for some pics). However, the height of the ‘Fifth Season’ is inarguably Maskenball, which takes place each year the Saturday before Ash Wednesday. This year Maskenball took place at the beautiful Marunde Ball Room at DANK Haus, and the BSV-Chicago was there in force, and in a a new uniform.

Our DANK friend, Nicole, at Maskenball, besides wearing an award winning costume, she was there to make sure everything ran smoothly, from opening doors to clearing away any bumps on the road. Thanks Nicole!

(L) Dahra (M) Eric and (R) The whole hive take a break from the action

The King and Queen Shoot for 2026 was held 11 February and was hugely successful as we all had a terrific time. The competition began around 8:00 and finished at 12:30, although the party didn’t end then either. For those of you unfamiliar with this fantastic club tradition, we shoot annually to determine who will be the King and Queen for the following year. There are also awards given out to those who manage to sever one of the two claws or two wings that are then awarded in the Spring at our meeting in uniform.

We begin by randomly selecting our shooting order and then taking turns, one after the other to shoot off the Eagles right wing, before shooting for the left one, followed by the left talon and then finally the right talon, in that order. Interestingly also is the fact that traditionally the new Eagle is painted by the current King as one of the last official acts of his reign. In this case, Matt Hoppe did an amazing job of preparing unser Adler dieses Jahr.

More than 25 BSV Members vie for honors in 2026

Although for various reasons, not all of the assembled members elected to participate in the shoot itself, we still had a nice sized group of about 27 to compete against, as the roster above demonstrates.

A couple of those who participated, (Below)

The winners, Ann Pausha-right wing at 8:44, Anne Mickey-left wing at 9:00, Melissa Fuller-left talon at 9:52 and Mike Zink-right talon at 10:02 Congratulations to all of our winners. Before continuing on and determining our new King and Queen elect, the club took a short break to refuel, thank you to everyone who brought food for us to enjoy. Ann Pausha is a repeat winner having shot the Lt Wing last year, Double Trouble

After the pause we reconvene, and those members who meet the minimum qualifications and who have the ability and inclination to serve as one of the Royal pair for the next year begin to take turns, the girls in shooting off the tail, and the boys to sever the head.

The tale of the tape, er tail-sorry I couldn’t resist

The reverse side of both the head, and tail from this year’s competition. The tail proved to be particularly stubborn this year, keeping us in suspense in determining who our new Queen elect would be until nearly half past midnight, but in the end John Fuller and Susanne Mickey emerged as the Royal Paar for 2026

This year’s Queen and King Elect

Beyond our normal weekly get togethers, January featured our first big club function of 2026 hosting the DANK’s Auction Winner. While we are always pleased to participate in these great events, it takes a lot of help to do so safely, the BSV’s number one goal, and to ensure our that hosts have fun and we hope also learn something along the way. Below are a few additional photo’s from the 2026 function.

The crew that makes it work, thanks everybody. Also pictured, Below left, is our friend from DANK, Nicole who helps make everything work that much better. Nicole, Danke Sehr

The final event of 2025 was our annual Christmas Party and we were lucky to have about 30 members come together and toast the season. Everyone got in on the action including Kris Kringle himself. Merry Christmas and a joyous 2026 to all!

Although 11/11 officially kicks off the start of Karneval every year, in 2025 the RV got the party started on November 8th, and we were there, along with some great friends of the club. The BSV usually sendsa large contingent to Maskenball, (14 Feb 2026) but it was nice coming to the kickoff event to the fifth season. Here are a few pics

Speaking of entertaining, the busiest band in the world, our very own Erich Freibergers’ Paloma, played the Karneval kickoff. October 18th, 2025 we sent a team down to St Louis to represent the BSV at their annual St Hubertus competition. As always, a big thank you to those members who made the trip down. Our club away trips are always a lot of fun, and the club does its best to help compensate members financially for their expenses, so if you are interested, consider joining us in 2026.

Open House Chicago 2025, October 18-19. Our eighth year in a row helping DANK greet hundreds of visitors to our home and showing off what we do. Another example of how active the club is, and how much we have become involved in our community.

The fabulous Warren Perlstein documented this year’s Open House photographically and in addition to lots of pics from the entire event, there are a bunch of BSV-Chicago images as well. Click the link to view them all and thank you once again Warren!

October 5th at St Benedicts. Just a couple of more pics for your enjoyment (Below).

Can you find Sabina’s mother (Rt)? We were thrilled to meet her and have a safe flight home!

For the last couple of year’s the club has met at Laschetts for a meal and drinks before walking over to St Benedicts for the German-American Commemoration Day. Matt was able to reserve us the Stammtisch once again-thanks buddy

On October 4th the German American Police Association celebrated their 50th anniversary with an Octoberfest party at the Elmcrest in Elmwood Park, Illinois. Reigning BSV King Matt Hoppe, BSV President, and wife Mr and Mrs John Fuller, as well as the BSV Schiesswart, and his bride, Gale and Nancy Fabisch and BSV member Dagmar Freiberger all were in attendance. Notably, BSV member Erich Freiberger, and his band Paloma provided their usual level of excellent entertainment. Pic Below.

This year, as we do every year we look forward to the beginning of September and with it the annual von Steuben Parade. 2025 proved to be yet another successful year with perfect weather, food and drink. Thank you to the everyone who came out and to Matt for providing the keg, Monte for his cooking talents and Jason for providing us with the grill. Particular thanks to Dahra and Melissa who dressed the float, and to all of you members who helped put it all together. Below are a few photos-enjoy

BSV-Chicago Annual Karl Frentz Memorial Picnic, August 2025. To many friends to thank here for pulling the event together, but you know who you are. Here are a couple of pics.

Attention! An important safety notice from the BSV-Chicago and the NTSB. When transporting loved ones, and precious cargo, always make sure the little ones are safely seat belted in. Tragedy was barely avoided at this year’s picnic; please don’t let this happen to your family.

2nd Vice President Gale, takes a moment to enjoy the 2025 BSV-Chicago Picnic. Gale, thanks for the hard work all year long.

Milwaukee German Fest, July 2025: The BSV joins with their Schuetzengeschwister from across the Midwest to celebrate the Schuetzen tradition at Milwaukee’s annual Folks Festival. In treue Bruderschaft-the Midwest Schuetzenbund

Hannover 2025-the world’s largest Schuetzenfestival takes place here every July. This year we had two different members attend the fest, and as promised, we have started to add some of their photo’s, with more coming. Enjoy!

No trip to Germany is complete without diving into the cuisine and Hannover 2025 was no exception. Matt sent us some great pics, truly we had no idea he was such a gourmand, for you to enjoy.

It is nice to see the BSV King’s Travel Chain putting on some miles; Mit eine Flasche of Tannenzaepfle-lecker! (Above). Marching photo’s and video from Hannover (Below).

Fortunately, it wasn’t all work for the BSV-Chicago representatives as they were able to find a little time to elevate themselves with careful thought and introspection which was fortunately captured here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cM5VgI2PdR4

As most of you know, a conflict rages in Germany that is as acrimonious as Bears-Packers, or Yankees-Red Sox. While attending the Schuetzenfest this year, BSV correspondent Matt Hoppe attempted to discover which of these two is the best. We are afraid to ask him, but you can…

Needless to say, making friends at the Schuetzenfest in Hannover is as commonplace as the Gemutlichkeit is great. Here Brittany poses with a few friends in 2025

If you know him then you know that King Matt is no shrinking violet either, here he is making new friends for the BSV-Chicago.

This June we really enjoyed attending the Forest Park Festival where both of our favorite bands, Paloma, and Pieptone performed. BSV-Club Member, John McLaughlin was singled out by RV Prinz Art for his contributions to the German-American Community and was bestowed an Orden by the Prinz in recognition of same. Congratulations to John and to all of the BSV members who has been so honored. Below

True Dedication, below. Members meet before the June ’25 meeting in uniform to discuss the important topics they would like to see added to the agenda. Thanks for the dedication and hard work guys.

Every year in preparation for our annual ball, we paint and prep the range, but in 2025 we went a step further and physically updated it to accommodate the ‘Orion’ electronic scoring system. This would not have been possible without the essential help of John Mickey who deserves all the credit for this transformation. Thanks, John
